Our research is connected to current societal challenges, including the impact of the recent wave of Ukrainian refugees on the Czech education system. Tomáš Lintner, a member of our research team, presented findings on the integration of Ukrainian students in Czech schools during the Teaching Across Borders program. This event connected future teachers from Czechia, France, and Germany.

Using data from the SYRI Institute, the research tracked how peer networks evolved over the school year and how Ukrainian students gradually found their place in the classroom. While they initially had fewer friendship ties than their Czech peers, this was mainly due to their smaller numbers. Overall, Ukrainian students became more integrated into peer networks as the school year progressed. However, there were considerable differences in the degree of integration among Ukrainian students.

The study offers a unique perspective on how Ukrainian refugee students have adapted to education in Czechia.
